This unit of competency describes the skills and knowledge required to use and care for a range of hand tools and battery and electric power tools to carry out farriery or hoof care activities.

The unit applies to individuals who use a range of tools and practical skills while working with and preparing shoes and hoof care products for equines.

Workplace health and safety and animal welfare legislation relevant to interacting with horses applies to workers in this industry. Requirements vary between industry sectors and state/territory jurisdictions. Users are advised to check with the relevant authority for specific requirements.

No licensing or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Assessment Tasks

Copy and paste from the following data to produce each assessment task. Write these in plain English and spell out how, when and where the task is to be carried out, under what conditions, and what resources are needed. Include guidelines about how well the candidate has to perform a task for it to be judged satisfactory.

Use tools safely and according to manufacturers' specifications 
Use tools to produce desired outcomes according to hoof care plan and task specifications including shape, size and finish 
Carry out routine maintenance of tools, including sharpening, using standard practices and techniques 
Repair or replace defective or unsafe tools 
Store and secure tools safely in appropriate location according to workplace requirements
